A year later

Good lord, how is it a new year? Feels like a decent lifetime. Professionally, I found it took roughly a year to make the full transition from 20 years in university press publishing to a full-time freelance career, both in terms of experiences and most certainly income. I would love to know if this comports with the experience of colleagues out there, who have made the jump from higher ed publishing admin to solo freelance. I find myself now working in fiction and non-fiction equally, which is a delight. So much fine writing out there! I confess I do not mind switching roles from pure acquisitions work to freelance developmental editing yet.

Approaching Publishers

This will be the start of an occasional set of notes, hopefully helpful! To start, let’s start at the beginning: Try to avoid a scattershot approach to submitting a query to any and all publishers. Rather, let’s work on targeting specific publishers based on your project, and let’s tailor it to catch the editor’s attention.
